WCAG Guideline 1.1.1: Non-text Content

Providing text alternatives for images

Why Text Alternatives Matter

Images must include text alternatives so users who rely on screen readers can understand the content or function of the image. This page demonstrates proper use of the alt attribute to meet WCAG Level A requirements.

Informative Image Example

Marching band member in a blue uniform playing a trumpet, with other band members blurred in the background

This image includes descriptive alternative text that communicates the same information a sighted user would receive.

Decorative Image Example

This decorative image has an empty alt attribute so it is ignored by assistive technologies.
